Three things every Christian should know about the Old Testament

Three Things Christians Should Know About the Old Testament | Episode 03: The unBibled Podcast

Often when I talk to Christians about studying the Bible, I hear that they enjoy the Gospels and most of the New Testament. But I also hear from many people that they find the Old Testament confusing and therefore difficult to understand.

If you’ve struggled to study the Old Testament and been tempted to avoid it altogether, you’re not alone. The Old Testament can be hard to understand and the customs and culture can seem very removed from our own. But as Bible believing Christians, we can’t “unhook” the Old from the New.

In this episode, Liz shares 3 things Christians should know about the Old Testament… and understanding these three truths, will help you as you study through the Old Testament. To help you better understand the Old Testament keep in mind that context is really key. When I study through the Old Testament I like to use commentaries to help me better understand what I’m reading.

My favorite free online commentary is from Pastor David Guzik. It’s called the Enduring Word Commentary and I have found it so helpful when I’m studying the Bible—especially the Old Testament.

Another favorite Old Testament resource is the book, The Epic of Eden: A Christian Entry into the Old Testament by Sandra L. Richter (Amazon link: https://amzn.to/4kSOvHF ). This book was hugely helpful to me in understand the Old Testament. I started by listening to the book and learned so much I ordered a print copy so I could take notes/highlight text.

Richter does a wonderful job of providing historical context and connecting Old Testament events, practices, and people to the New Testament. I can’t recommend it enough!

If you’ve avoided the Old Testament in your Bible studies, I pray this episode of the unBibled podcast will help you to give it another try. We are blessed by the entirety of Scripture, Old and New, beginning to end.

"Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits."

Matthew 7:15-20 ESV
