If you had told me in the summer of 2015 that I only had one year left of living in Arizona and one year left of working for Showit I would have disagreed with you. I would’ve been nice about it, but I might have called you crazy to your face. But that’s the thing about seasons of life. Unlike the seasons of the year that inevitably change with the months, our seasons of life are unpredictable and trying to forecast them is almost impossible.
This past June my husband and I found ourselves rather unexpectedly at the end of a season. We could stay in Arizona and maintain a life we enjoyed, but that came at a pretty high cost, or we could do something a little out of the ordinary and chase a dream that often felt elusive. Like so many other small business owners and people our age we had a combination of credit card debt and student loan debt that felt like the weight of the world on our shoulders. We wondered how we would ever be able to get our from underneath it and often joked that it would take a miracle. Through a series of some fortunate and unfortunate events we came to the decision that we would rather take a leap of faith and try to live life a little differently than continue to try to get ahead in the life we were living.
Leaving our life in Arizona meant that we could pay off all of our credit card debt (through the sale of our house) and I could pursue my dream of becoming a writer. It also meant that my husband could pursue a teaching career in a smaller school district and we could spend more time with family. So in June we listed our house, gave away most of our possessions (no joke) and moved to my parent’s cattle ranch in far Northern California. In so many ways we turned our life upside down and yet it truly feels right side up. We’re calling this year The Reset Year and we’re focusing on the living a more intentional life where contentment is valued over consumption.
I am sad to be leaving our team at Showit but so grateful for the season God provided us in Arizona and excited for the new season we’re beginning. I have been a Showiteer since 2010 and always will be. I look forward to continuing friendships with the wonderful people in our community and industry. Stay in touch, don’t be a stranger and never be afraid to chase the dreams God lays on your heart.
