This presentation was originally prepared for my CSAP 680 course at Biola University during the Summer session of 2024. In addition to the presentation, which you can view above, I have included a downloadable PDF containing my sources, biblical references, links and complete bibliography.
Long before I ever considered going back to school for a theological education, the Lord planted the seed of his Word in the soil of my heart. (Matthew 13 - The Parable of the Sower). He grew a hunger in me to learn, study, and apply biblical truths in my daily life. That looked like early mornings, often before the sun would rise, spent digging through Scripture. Slowly and surely studying verse-by-verse, chapter-by-chapter, until I had read the entire Bible cover-to-cover. Then I would start again back at the beginning.
Did I understand everything I read? Not at all. But with time and later the aide of solid biblical commentaries and resources, I began to develop a greater, deeper understanding of the Word. It was only later (7-years to be exact) that the path I was on reached the place where I knew God was calling me back to school, as a seminary student.
My decision to apply to seminary wasn't made lightly. It's a big commitment of time and resources. And it isn't the path for everyone. But the Lord was faithful to make margin in my life for this very purpose, at this very time. And he was faithful to have given me a strong biblical foundation before I embarked on this next part of my calling to teach and equip found Christian women to engage the lost in fruitful conversations about God.
If you were to ask me what the most important thing was that I learned in those seven quiet years of study, I would say this: the Bible is not about me, the Bible is about God. Somewhere along the road of our very self-focused, me-myself-and-I culture we have lost the very basic truth that Scripture is God's self-revelation. Scripture is about God. That's what makes it Scripture. It is NOT about us.
As New Testament believers, the Bible wasn't written to us, or about us. It was written for us.
It's a mistake often made by new believers and in what I have come to call the "TikTok/TedTalk church." Instead of the truth being taught, instead of the Gospel being preached (you are a sinner in need of a Savior — Jesus Christ), pastors and preachers have found safety in saying only what people want to hear. (See 2 Timothy 4:1-5)
And when the truth isn't taught, the people aren't prepared. They cannot tell the truth the Bible freely gives from the lies the world tries to sell.
"I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:
preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.
For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,
and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry."
(2 Tim. 4:1-5 [ESV])
That is why a strong biblical foundation is critical if you want to be able to defend the Christian faith and worldview, which is what it means to be an apologist.
Put simply, you can't defend what you don't know.
Whether or not you are a "professional" apologist, as a Christian you will have your faith questioned. Are you prepared to defend it? Do you know what you actually believe about God? About Jesus? About the Holy Spirit? About the Bible?
Have you spent time thinking through these questions? Have you spent time preparing yourself to be ready to answer them?
No one runs a marathon without training. It would be a foolish endeavor to try. The same goes for being prepared to give a defense of your faith. In order to prepare, you must first know what you are defending. To know what you are defending, you need to know what the Bible says.
If you want to be a good Christian apologist, start with a strong biblical foundation.
YOU CAN'T DEFEND WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW.
There are many different resources available for Christians who want to deepen their understanding of the Bible and/or develop a solid understanding of Christian Apologetics. The first place to start is the Bible. Developing a daily, disciplined, and diligent study of the Bible is life changing — but you won't experience it until you make a commitment to it.
You'll also find that there are a variety of resources in the forms of books, courses, workshops, conferences, podcasts and more!
Remember to be discerning as you sort through the resources you come across. Just because a book is marketed as Christian content or even published by a Christian publisher, does not guarantee that the ideas contained within the book (or any other media) is in fact biblical. You will need to be studying the Bible for yourself and know what it says in order to discern if something you're reading, watching, or listening to is true to what the Word says.
You may be surprised (and then disappointed) to find that many of the Christian authors and speakers you follow on social media, or whose books you buy or whose podcasts you listen to, are in fact mishandling the Word of God.
Remember that the heart behind knowing the truth is not so you can win at Jeopardy — it's so you can rightly divide the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15).
We're not called to judge, but we are called to discern. Discerning solid biblical content from fluff or even heretical blasphemy is key to developing a strong Christian apologetic.
If you're serious about learning more about Christian Apologetics, one of the best resources I can recommend to you is the Christian Apologetics certificate program available through Biola University. It is a multi-module, online course delivered through more than 30+ hours of audio instruction from leading Christian Apologists.
Through the program you will learn about a variety of topics related to apologetics including the Problem of Evil, Defense of the Resurrection, the Origin of Life, and more. This valuable course includes an official program certificate for those who complete all the lessons and associated quizzes (no additional work) and costs less than $200.
If you're interested in pursuing a Master's Degree in Christian Apologetics, Biola offers the MA in Christian Apologetics entirely online.
If you're interested in learning how the Bible came to be, this concise explanation is a great resource. Beginning with the Old Testament and going through the New, the author provides a variety of context, definitions and easy-to-understand explanations of the earliest versions of God's Word.
I read this book as part of the recommended curriculum for the Certificate in Christian Apologetics offered by the Talbott School of Theology at Biola University, which I highly recommend.
It isn't easy reading, but it's worth taking the time to work through and will help you be better prepared to answer questions from non-believers and those struggling with issues of faith.
Written in the 1990s, this book is just as relevant to the profound issue moral relativism is having on American society today.
Written by two leading Christian Apologists, Franics J. Beckwith and Gregory Koukl, this book will help you to better understand how to speak truth to those struggling with understanding that issues like morality and truth are absolute.
Here are just a handful of books you may find helpful as you mature in your study of the Bible and begin to develop a solid strategy for defending the faith — which is what is means to be an apologist.
If learning to read and study the Bible properly is your heart's goal, this is a wonderful book! Author Walt Russell walks through the use of proper biblical hermeneutics and then walks through the various types of literary genres in the Bible.
There are so many wonderful resources you can use to help you in your desire to seek "more" of Jesus. The first place to start is God's Holy Word. Be in the Bible friend. Be in it daily. And while it's great to have the Bible on an electronic device like your phone, if you are able to, try studying using a physical, printed Bible so as to minimize distractions when you spend time with the Lord in His Word. If this is not possible for you, do your best to limit distractions such as notifications. It will bless you to spend quiet, intentional, uninterrupted time in the Bible.
Please understand that the recommended resources are not a full endorsement of the source, publisher, designer or creator but are recommended based on the specific content shared. Humans are by our very nature prone to error and sadly to sin. To the best of my ability the recommended resources have been researched and vetted, but those searches are not exhaustive, infallible or everlasting... except for the Bible in correct translations.
I only recommend books I have read, podcasts I have listened to, and resources I have used.

Apologists and apologetics are often heard as big words that inspire images of older men in tweed jackets, sitting by fireplaces, smoking pipes. Are you picturing C.S. Lewis yet? But the truth is that everyone is an apologist and has an apologetic for something. That includes you, whether you realize it or not. An apologist […]
